About the project

The "LITTLE MINDS, BIG FOCUS" project aims to enhance preschool education by equipping teachers and parents with mindfulness techniques to support children's focus, emotional regulation, and self-discipline, creating a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

According to the European Commission (2021), early childhood education plays a crucial role in cognitive, emotional, and social development, shaping children’s lifelong learning abilities. However, many preschool children struggle with concentration, self-regulation, and emotional balance, which negatively impacts their learning experiences. Studies indicate that children with poor attention and emotional control are more likely to face difficulties in academic performance and social interactions later in life (European Commission, 2022).

Moreover, teachers and parents often lack the necessary tools to help children develop these essential skills. While high-quality early childhood education and care (ECEC) systems emphasize holistic child development, there is limited structured training available for educators on integrating mindfulness techniques into classroom activities (European Commission, 2023). Parents, too, report challenges in reinforcing mindfulness practices at home, leading to inconsistent emotional regulation strategies between school and home settings.

The "LITTLE MINDS, BIG FOCUS" project addresses these challenges by providing preschool teachers and parents with structured training and resources to integrate mindfulness techniques into early childhood education. The project will develop:

  • A teacher training program to equip educators with arts, yoga, and sensory play-based mindfulness strategies for classroom implementation.
  • A "5-Minute Mindfulness at Home" guide to support parents in reinforcing mindfulness techniques outside the school environment.
  • An online learning platform to ensure long-term access to training materials and continuous support for teachers and parents.

Unlike traditional early childhood training programs, this project takes a dual approach, focusing on both educators and parents to create a consistent mindfulness learning environment. The integration of arts, yoga, and sensory play-based techniques makes mindfulness engaging and developmentally appropriate for preschoolers. The project’s train-the-trainer model ensures sustainability, empowering trained teachers to mentor others, creating lasting impact beyond the project’s duration.

The project will lead to:

  • Improved attention span, emotional regulation, and classroom engagement among preschool children.
  • Teachers equipped with structured mindfulness strategies, leading to more inclusive and effective classroom management.
  • Parents are actively involved in supporting children’s focus and emotional well-being at home.
  • A sustainable, scalable approach to mindfulness education in early childhood, with potential for integration into national ECEC policies.

The Specific Goal is to develop and implement structured mindfulness-based training for kindergarten teachers and parents, integrating arts, yoga, and sensory play techniques to help young learners improve their attention, emotional well-being, and classroom engagement.
Objectives:

  • Empower kindergarten teachers with research-based training and practical tools to integrate mindfulness strategies into early childhood education.
  • Support parents in reinforcing mindfulness practices at home through the "5-Minute Mindfulness at Home" guide.
  • Create an inclusive learning environment that improves children’s self-regulation, attention span, and emotional resilience while supporting diverse learning needs.
